WEDDING IN GALILEE - Dir : Michel Khleifi (Palestine)

27 April 2006 (Thurs) - 7pm
National Museum

Finally get to watch the film after the postponement. Today hb picked me up from work & there's not much jam, so we reached Stamford Road around 6.10pm. We decide to hv something to bite first & end up having tehtarik and shared a plate of Nasi Bryani. The film started at 7pm to not so many audience. This film won at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival.

It's abt the depiction of a small village in Palestine through the prism of a wedding. The father of the groom gets approval from the Israel Governor to hold a traditional wedding for his son, on the condition that the Israeli military Governor & his staffs be guests of honour at the ceremony. This request brought anger to some of the villagers who hv deep hatred for the Israelis (for all the things they've done). A group of 4 young men plotted to assassinate the Governor & his teams.

The film unfolds the cultural & tradition in a Palestinian Wedding. On how the whole guests waited for the 'white bed sheet' with 'blood' spots to be brought out... meaning the wedding hv been consummated. When the groom hv problem to 'touch' his bride (too angry wif his father for inviting the Governor), the family became panicky & wanted to call the doctor... while the guest kept on going with the party, which will end only after the couple had consummated. Anyway, the assassination plot failed & the bride eventually took her own virginity (don't ask me how, hehehe...)

The show is ok, except - why all the nude scenes ? (got mandi bunga lah..) .... Aishk !!

Some scenes showing man holding hands, kissing each other.... & the woman pampering each other, might be mistaken in the West as being homosexual or lesbians... but this their way of welcoming friends & enjoying each other's company... nothing to do with homosexuality or being lesbians (which is the problem in the Western world) ... so don't be deceived !

We went straight home & managed to play with baby for awhile before he went to bed...

Ate Muhshi wrapped in cabbage & brinjal for dinner (supper) ... yum, yum...

Still on the Film Fest...

15 April 2006 - Sat 9.15pm : Lido
Wedding in Galilee : Dir - Michel Khleifi (Palestine)

8.30pm left home. With hb - drove all the way to Prince2 : show postponed to 27 April 2006 !! What the @#$%*….
Anyway, on the way back, I felt like drinking tehtarik - so we headed to
Old Bedok & had tehtarik, beef kueteow in upeh for hb & rojak....

17 April 2006 - Mon 9.15pm : Prince2
Sleeping Child
: Dir Yasmine Kassari (Morocco)

A nice film... it explores the life of an isolated generation of women living a rural part of Morocco dealing with the separation fm their husbands who had gone to Spain looking for jobs. Zeinab's husband depart to Spain with his friends a day after their wedding. When she found out that she was 3 months pregnant, her MIL brought her to the local healer, so that the baby can be 'put to sleep' awaiting her son's return to witness the birth of his baby. A 'white magic' was performed by scribbling something (like ayat) on a paper - to be wrapped in copper & kept safely - if opened, the child will never wake up again. Upon deciding to wake up the child, the 'talisman' have to be washed down the river...

The film potrayed the hard life the women faced, working on the bereft land, once worked by the men, who had gone to Spain (facing hard reality that 'the grass is NOT greener on the other side' - No Job in Spain). Anyway, at the end... after a year or so, Zeinab managed to contact her husband & seeked his permission to wake the child up ... he said 'yes', & she let the 'talisman' flow down the river bed...

My question :
Does this practice really exist in Morocco ? My search in the internet bears no fruit ! Can one make the baby in your womb sleep as long as u wanted & wake it up at your convenience ?... huh ? Bagus jugak sey, but....Scientifically & logically... ILLOGICAL ! ??????????????????????? Wallahu-Alam

21 April 2006 - Fri 9.15pm : Prince2
I love Cinema : Dir. Oussama Fawzi (Egypt)
{my hb's friend)

Hb was out wif the Arab directors from morning, so I drove to Prince myself & lost my way... coming out of Baliestier instead of Kallang & driving all the way to Sim Lim tower & having to call hb several time to lead me to Prince ... hahaha... (typical me).

It's a beautiful film that are able to effect you personally... u go with the flow & gets into the character. Set in the sixties, this is a controversial film in Egypt, that had angered the Coptic Christian. (that's why it's NC 16, I guess)
It's abt a boy - Naeem, who's love for the movies met with great disapproval from his father... who constantly warned that cinema, singing, dancing will never never see him to heaven.. they r SINFUL.... HARAM !...That Naeem's a bad boy & will go to hell and the fire & worms will devour him, etc..etc..etc.. So the boy gets into cute mischieves & sometimes tell ppl that it doesn't matter that he's bad cos he's going to hell anyway. At other time he negotiated with God - telling Him that if he's able to watch certain movies, he'll be good & say his prayers, etc....
Well, lots of events unfolded & happened.. the movie is funny, cute & emotional (a bit provocative) and touch the reality of our lives (eventhough we wld love to deny it)... of a father's struggle to keep the family fm going to 'hell' by refraining them fm doing what's forbidden.
The film do get loud applause fm the audience.

After the show, we (hb, Oussama & me) went to Al-majlis.. we were joined later by the other directors; Nidal (Syria), Jocelyne (Lebanon), Michel (Palestine) & Wael (Jounalist fm Egypt)... I was BORED by their conversations ! Especially in Arabic which most of it I DON'T really understand !! (Hb should hv sent me home first)... anyway, I was so tired & juz kept quiet... Although Jocelyne & Michel questioned me on why I decide to cover myself, to which I juz answered "bcos I wanted to" (malas nak layan)- After her film 'Dunya', I know she thought of 'us' as being suppressed... well WHO CARES !!!... we left around 2am & reached home abt 2.30am, all shagged up !! ZZZzzz.....

But I do enjoy the movie very much.....

26 April 2006 - Wed 7pm : National Museum
"A New Day in Old Sana'a" -
Dir : Bader Ben Hirsi (Yemen)

From work, I drove to YMCA carpark to meet with hb... no carpark so we go around, parked at SMU and walked to National Museum.

Another well done movie, filmed entirely in breathtaking ancient part of Sana'a, Yemen.
Abt a spoilt brad rich girl, soon to be wed. In a community & tradition where love & choosing yr own partner is unheard of, the groom realised that he's actually in love with an ophaned low-class girl. An Italian he worked with, who's there to photograph the life of the ppl there don't really understand why this love affair could be complicated....in a society where u don't marry a person but married the whole family & community. And how could anyone fall in love without knowing each other or even seeing each other ... How love can strike you by just looking into the eyes of the veiled woman. SubhanaAllah... those eyes that could stop a man with juz a glance. Fredriko (the Italian) soon began to understand as he mixed & learned abt their lifes, and one day himself experienced the glance of a woman's eyes when the veiled woman he passed by & accidentally looked up to him... MasyaAllah...beautiful, captivating (yes, juz the eyes!)

The ending is a bid sad... cos Tariq, after asking Ineez to wait for him on the bridge at Midnite to elope, left her standing there till dawn waiting for him. He decided not to shame his family & married his fiancee after all (wat's her name)... So, Ineez... still hoping for Tariq to come, will at every midnite sneaked to the bridge & wait for her beloved.. hoping that one day he'll come... only to find dawn breaking the sky.. she dragged herself home yet again... and waiting with hope for "A New Day in Old Sana'a"....

Wah, after that I was so hungy.... so we set to a Hawker centre in Kallang (famous for soup tulang) & hb had his rib soup & I had mee kuah mama.....
Reached home abt 10.15 & my baby was already in dream land.... sigh... :(

The 19th Singapore Film Festival is going on now.
So, this time they brought in several Arab films.

13th April 2006 -
Opening nite film "Kiss me not in the Eye" or the Arabic title "Dunya" ... why the difference in the title, I don't know...cos Dunya is the name of the lead character & it should be left that way instead of having a totally different English tittle...

No intention to watch the show cos price is very steep.. $22/- per ticket !!! ... way expensive boy !
As planned, we went Substation after dinner & sholat maghrib, to watch a show put up by Ezzam... these Artistic presentations are always weird to me but hb wanted to meet him & since tomorrow is holiday.. why not ? Ezzam's show was at 7pm but we reached around 8.15, so his was over ...
(selamat... hehehe..)
There's a chinese funeral band playing in a room (why is it called 'art' when it's at Substation ; while it's a nuisance if played under the block !)... Anyway, in the other room sits a bald man painted all white & wearing a white long robe - sitting very still in front of a long table with bones & whatever things (I was scared to go near !)...knifes were thrown all over the floor... Eeerie ! Jeezz... ARTS !!.. never understand what the heck the messages are.. !

So, we decided to leave & headed to Lido & burn $44/- to watch "Dunya". Many Arabs gals there, so it's somewhat like going to a hafla.. hehehe...

1. Opening- a short film by Malaysian Director "U-Wei" titled "My beautiful Rambutan tree in Tanjung Rambutan". A slow film... ZZzzz....

Abt a bro & sis left alone one nite while their parents went to a wedding. Earlier, dad had brought back a bunch of rambutans & they decided to eat them. So they played & fought, the sis then climbed on a small stool - getting something on the wardrobe.. the boy came in & pull the stool, she felt... & .. DIED ! (..how could she die ?).
Anyway, he dragged her down.. to the garden.. dig a grave & buried her (all by himself... ya, a boy of abt 9 yrs old, hah !) The parents came home & asked where's the sis.. he kept quiet, so they called the police. Days passed & u see this boy watering the grave everyday. A small tree sprout out... u guess ? - A RAMBUTAN TREE ! (must be fm his sis' tummy.. hahaha !). Finally, the teenage boy sat by the window.. his mum called him to eat his dinner ... the camera moved to the big Rambutan tree on the grave... THE END... (What a joke!... for 30 mins u watch this !... )
These questions remains in my sleepy & bored mind.. how the girl died from the short fall ? How lousy are the police ?.. didn't they go around the house compound and see the newly dug soil ?
.. anyway these short films always boggle my brain with how ridiculous they are .. so be it !

2. Then the Arab film "Kiss me Not in the Eye" or "Dunya" by a Lebanese Director Jocelyne Saab, its supposed to be an examination on contemporary Egypt - a society still bounded by traditions. 'Dunya' (the girl) interest are in poetry & belly dancing, but being in a society where expressing & discussing SEX is a taboo, she found it difficult to embrace her sensuality & express herself in the poems she wrote or read, & in her dance. Her thesis supevisor Prof. tried to help her thru' traditional Sufi poetry ( not accepted well in Egypt community cos of being lustful) .. Blah, blah, blah... he was attacked one day & become almost blind. Ok.. she's close to him, but married her boyfriend...
Her problem ?.. the sensuality in her still doesn't erupt like a volcano.. hahaha....

This film also shows the issue girl circumcision. (WHAT'S THE PROBLEM WITH THESE PPL ?.. EUROPEAN influence !!... It's never an issue amongst those that practices it.. but a BIG problem to the outside world !...Kepo !.. juz leave us alone lah!) So a girl was circumcised by her grandma without her mother's blessing (she said this will kill sexual desire..) her daughter will be like her !... boo hoo !!
THE JOKE ? ... in this film, this woman is like a sex machine.. everyday waiting for her husband's return so they can have sex the whole day ! WHAT A CONTROVERSIAL MESSAGE !
What sexual desire of her's has died due to circumcision ?.. she's like a sex maniac burning hot with desire !!!
Anyway... poetry, poetry... dance, dance.... ('Dunya' can't even belly dance well).. eventually, she left her husband to 'find' herself... Ya rite ! 'find' herself in bed with the professor... !! Then suddenly... teng-deng-deng.... There it was ! her inner sensuality.. BOOM... explosion !!.. hahaha...

WHAT A CRAP !!
The film is actually ok (Hana : the actress later won the Best Actress in this film festival) ... but I can't agree with the issues at all !
Firstly, of course abt the girl circumcision thingy which according to them is 'mutation' !
Secondly, why can't she find her sensuality?... juz because she can't discuss sex in the open & have sex out of wedlocks?.. Peleezzzz, we don't do that !!.. but sensuality we definitely have (yes, circumsised and all !)...go ask our husband !!

Met a few Egyptian girls after & all sounded upset wif the film... saying that the Director is the one having problem with her sensuality.. hehehe.. & what rite she hv to potray Egyptian gals like that, when she herself is Lebanese... !! ok, cool gals...
I hv the chance to speak to the Director..."how's the film?" she asked... "oh, nice.." my reply (of course lah... polite aper). But she's shocked to know that we are circumcised & when I told her that it's not an issue here. She said that circumcision are done & that the 'whole thing' is chopped off !.. I wonder, mmpphh....did she do any studies? Then I talked to this white woman & a chinese girl (the organisers). I said "Well, most (if not all) the Muslim woman & girls I know here are circumcised" ! ... This Sporean woman looked stunned, sounded shocked & kept on denying it....
How would u know ?.. U ignorant $@$^** !

Hehehe... actually hah, I do have a good time, spending time with my hb on a late nite date... later we sit at McDonalds & chit-chat till around 2am ! Came back home to my sleeping baby around 2.30am... sigh ! MUAACKKSS !!! miss my baby....

THE ZOO TRIP

Well this posting might be 3mths late, but What-the-heck ! Here I goes....

Went to the Zoo with darling hubby and baby for the 2nd time on 14 Jan 2006. This time, however... my 13yrs old son & maid tagged along...

The FIRST trip we went just before my baby turns One - Wrong planning! It was just me, hubby and baby. We were early & was at the Zoo around 9am. Weekday & not many ppl around - nice day !.... The wrong move ? - we went around viewing the big animals in big their cages & panting around trying to catch those animal shows that baby's not really interested in !. Then stomach grumbles oredy, so KFC there we went ! "After that can go Animal Farm" (I thought). Yum, yum...
Then baby saw the playground & playpool ! Weeeeeee... he rushed off ! Oh boy ! I didn't bring any swimsuit for him, but anyway... splosh ! he went in & gets very wet (& myself too).
After an hour or so, I showered & changed him... Have to rush to the Animal Farm before he naps ! ... but no success to keep those adorable eyes opened, it close shut !... so we set for home.

This time, must plan well ! Must cover Animal Farm & the Tropical Forest where baby can enjoy the 'small' animals. So we were a bit late by 1.5 hrs... hehehe ! Reached the Zoo abt 10.30am & straight to the Animal Farm ! He's very happy.. shouting, jumping, feeding the animals & wanted to squeeze the hamsters ! The dog show , however, doesn't interest him much though.

Umi, will my foot grow as big as Komali's ?

~ Here little sheepy..come Mammam..

~ . ~
ehem.. wanna feed me next?..how abt lunch after this?> > Sliding down... wow !

Baba, why r the elephant so tiny ?

Anyway, it was nearly 1pm, so, hv to satisfy our rumbling tummy, the answer ? - KFC !!. After yum, yum.....tadadaa..dadaa...
Play Ground & Play Pool ! This time, I hv his swim suit ready. Oh Boy ! Splishing & splashing Time ! Baby doesn't walk yet.. so hv to hold him around... slowly slowly please.. Umi is getting wet too ! !! Running, jumping and chasing the other children around (esp. girls.. hehe)... !!
"Ok.. time's up and don't kick those legs !.. it had been more than and hour oredy !."
Yippiee !! Splish... splash... splosh.... !!

.. now how to get umi wet too ?
Hi beautiful,...
...........wow, u big size leh, no chance lah, wait u buly me !

Then guessed what ? ... He slept from exhaustion !

We do take the walk in the Tropical Forest though cos my maid have not been to the Zoo before, however my 13 yrs old looks very uninterested. Oh ! how I wish baby is up see all those cute animals there... he would have enjoyed it ! Well, there's always another day..... InsyaAllah.
Guess I have to make more trips to the Zoo...

.. Tropical Forest, here we come.. next !

To sum it all up !

THE REMINDER

Received this e-mail from a cousin of mine & suddenly I felt so 'Jahil'....Ya Rabb, please forgive me.

Forgive me for all the times when I face you during my prayers with thousand and one things in my mind - things that's not important, things that haven't bother me at all while I'm not in my prayer... but suddenly, after I stand on the 'sejadah', utter my Niah & takbir, there it comes.... These thoughts, these visions, these memories... "A'uudzubillahi Minasy Syaitaanir Rajiim"....
Then it's quick, quick - rush, rush... get it over with cos after this I have to do this, must do that, etc...... ; there it goes again - all the things I have to do right after my prayer. Why have I not thought of doing all these while I'm chatting with my friends, browsing thru the newspapers & magazines and especilly when I'm sitting in front of the TV ??? Why ??...

~~~ " Astaghrafirullah Hal 'Adzeem " ~~~
Forgive me Ya Allah, for I am weak... weak and lost to temptations, lust & influenced by the silent whispers of Al-Iblis & his Gang, Latnatullah... Go ! get away from me !!! Let me do my duty to my Creator in peace & sincerity...
~~~ " Bismillahir Rahman-nirRahim " ~~~

InsyaAllah, I will try my utmost best to be more Khusyu' & sincere in my prayers & all my good deeds. However, as per previous experiences - I know these feeling will last only for awhile, then as time goes by, we get drifted & lost in the sea of temptations... then we forget... "Na'uzubillah"..
That's why as Muslims, it's our duty to constantly remind each other, therefore, I thank my cousin Naz for this reminder.... Shukran Ghazilan.
Also, let me blog this down as a reminder to myself and to the rest that might read this...
May Allah give us strength, protect us & blessed us always, InsyaAllah... Ameen.

The e-mail reads : (sori in Malay)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
UNTUK RENUNGAN & INGATAN KITA BERSAMA
Untuk sembahyang lebih khusyuk.. -Wudhuk zahir dan batin
Seorang ahli ibadah bernama Isam Bin Yusuf, sangat warak dan khusyuk solatnya. Namun, dia selalu khuatir kalau-kalau ibadahnya kurang khusyuk dan selalu bertanya kepada orang yang dianggapnya lebih ibadahnya, demi untuk memperbaiki dirinya yang selalu dirasainya kurang khusyuk.
Pada suatu hari, Isam menghadiri majlis seorang abid bernama Hatim Al-Assam dan bertanya, "Wahai Aba Abdurrahman, bagaimanakah caranya tuan solat?" Hatim berkata, "Apabila masuk waktu solat, aku berwudhuk zahir dan batin."
Isam bert anya, "Bagaimana wudhuk zahir dan batin itu?"
Hatim berkata, "Wudhuk zahir sebagaimana biasa iaitu membasuh semua anggota wudhuk dengan air".
Sementara wudhuk batin ialah membasuh anggota dengan tujuh perkara :-
* Bertaubat
* Menyesali dosa yang telah dilakukan
* Tidak tergila-gilakan dunia
* Tidak mencari/mengharap pujian orang (riya')
* Tinggalkan sifat berbangga
* Tinggalkan sifat khianat dan menipu
* Meninggalkan sifat dengki."
Seterusnya Hatim berkata, "Kemudian aku pergi ke masjid, aku kemaskan semua anggotaku dan menghadap kiblat. Aku berdiri dengan penuh kewaspadaan dan aku rasakan:
1. aku sedang berhadapan dengan Allah,
2. Syurga di sebelah kananku,
3. Neraka di sebelah kiriku,
4. Malaikat Maut berada di belakangku, dan
5. aku bayangkan pula aku seolah-olah berdiri di atas titian 'Siratal mustaqim' dan menganggap bahawa solatku kali ini adalah solat terakhir bagiku, kemudian aku berniat dan bertakbir dengan baik."
"Setiap bacaan dan doa didalam solat, aku faham ! maknanya kemudian aku rukuk dan sujud dengan tawadhuk, aku bertasyahud dengan penuh pengharapan dan aku memberi salam dengan ikhlas.
Beginilah aku bersolat selama 30 tahun."
Apabila Isam mendengar, menangislah dia kerana membayangkan ibadahnya yang kurang baik bila dibandingkan dengan Hatim.
~~~~~~~~
End of E-mail
=====================================================================

Don't we fell the shame ?
Shame for not being able to do the simplest thing with sincerity in return for all the blessings that we have received from the Almighty, Allah Subhana Wata'ala.

Don't we feel the shame ?
Shame for not taking the effort to understand what we mummbles (recite) during our prayers, while we take the pain to memorise Lyrics in songs, poems & sayings - formulas & equations when we have to sit for our exams ?

What have we got to say ?
what excuses can we give ?

.... When we are there - face to face with Allah... !
Can we juz hang our head down in shame & say we are sorry ?

.....Ney, no, nope, zilth !!..... it's juz too late !!
